Sam Edkin's Trail Chair
I quite adore Sam Edkin's Trail Chair:
Sam Edkins Trail Chair takes inspiration from nature itself. Slugs flow from the seams, creases, folds, base and back of the chair leaving behind a shiny trail. Creating an uneasy and witty display evoking a love / hate relationship with the viewer.
The chair itself is luxuriously over stuffed offering a Bourgeois comfort, contrasting to the sense of decay, anarchy and the abject. The heavily pleated skirt that wraps the chair, references the over decoration once popular amongst Victorian furniture.
The use of cotton calico gives a new perspective to this traditional chair with a fresh clean and minimal covering. Cotton calico historically a material used as a base layer in traditional upholstery, would remain unseen. The desired effect is to evoke a feeling of something that has been stripped back to reveal what lies beneath in its rawest state.
The work combines, Digital print, Screen print and Foiling; juxtaposing traditional techniques with digital technology.
